# How to read a Pennsylvania sales tax license record

> Licenses and exemption certificates, expiration, masked account numbers, and how records are grouped.

## How to read these records

### License or certificate

A sales license (retail, wholesale, transient vendor, promoter) lets a business collect Pennsylvania sales tax at
one location. An exemption certificate lets a charity, church, school or volunteer fire company buy without tax.
“Active” means the holder currently has filing requirements with the Department, or a valid certificate.

### Expiration

Most licenses are renewed every five years. Some are permanent; the record then says so.

### One record per legal name

The state masks the account number, so rows cannot be tied by number. This site groups the rows that carry the
same legal name. Two different companies with the same name would be merged; one company written two ways appears
twice. The Department does not check the addresses it publishes.

### What is not here

Account numbers, individuals, and any business whose legal name has no company word (Inc, LLC, Corp, Co…).

**For owners and managers: does
your company have 30 to 200 employees?**

AI labs pay companies to license their internal workflows (SOPs,
documentation, support tickets), anonymized and under contract. You keep ownership and pay nothing.
